Assalamu Alaikum Everyone!
How are you doing? I hope you are having an amazing day wherever you are in the world! May Allah bless and shower you and all those you love with happiness and health.
For today’s post, I want it to be the beginning of a series (inshAllah). Every Friday, I will be doing a Figure Friday. Each Figure Friday post will cover an influential Muslimah that we should all look up to. InshAllah you are as excited as I am, and research more about these amazing Muslimahs.
Today we will be talking about Aisha Bint Abi Baker (RA) the beloved wife of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Aisha Bint Abi Baker (RA) was a very close companion to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Aisha (RA) was very smart, knowledgeable and had a good memory. The Prophet ﷺ had so much confidence in her he advised his community to learn half the knowledge of Islam from Aisha (RA).
When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked who is the most beloved to you, he said Aisha (RA). He called her the truthful, daughter of the truth, and the beloved of Allah’s most beloved (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ). Aisha (RA) and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had a very close bond, not like any other bond Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had with his other wives. There was a mutual affection between them. They played, bathed and swam together. There are multiple narrations detailing the love between Aisha (RA) and the Prophet ﷺ, and it serves as an example for how Muslim marriages should be today. Aisha (RA) gives an example of this in this hadith, “The Prophet ﷺ would call for a drink and insist that I drank from it first before he drank from it. So I would take it and drink from it, then put it down, then he would take it and drink from it, putting his mouth where mine had been on the cup” (Sunan an-Nasai). While in another account, Aisha (RA) had placed her chin on the shoulder of the Prophet ﷺ in order to watch some kids playing. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked her if she was done watching, and she kept saying no so she could still rest on his shoulder (Jami at-Tirmidhi).
Aisha Bint Abi Baker (RA) is considered to be one of the greatest scholars in Islam, and this is understable. She was witty and had a very good memory. She conveyed over two thousand narrations of the Prophet ﷺ. Aisha Bint Abi Baker (RA) provided Muslims insight into the actions and demeanor of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. As well as, the way he lived his life inside the home, including his sleeping habits and the way he treated his wives.
Whenever Muhammad ﷺ would go to his expeditions, he would pick one of his lady’s names. SubhanAllah, Aisha’s name (RA) would always pop up. On one of these expeditions, Aisha lost some sort of necklace, so she left the group she was in to look for it. They did not notice her missing, and therefore she was left behind. One of the Prophet’s ﷺ companions helped her return after he found her. When people heard of her return, they unfortunately began spreading rumours about the beloved Aisha (RA). People began falsely accusing Aisha (RA) of being unfaithful to Muhammad ﷺ with the male companion that rescued her.
Aisha (RA) fell very ill after returning from the expeditions and was clueless of the rumors spreading about her. Though, when Aisha (RA) heard about this rumours that were spreading quite fast, she cried for two days straight. When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and her parents asked her about this ordeal, she told them that “if I told you it’s not true, and Allah knows it’s not true, you won’t believe me. But, if I told you it [the rumours] is true, and Allah knows it’s not true, you will believe me”. Aisha (RA) said, “I went to my bed knowing at that time that I was innocent and that Allah would reveal my innocence, but by Allah, I never thought that Allah would reveal in my favor a revelation which would be recited, for I considered myself too unimportant to be talked about by Allah in the Divine Revelation that was to be recited” (Bukhari).
Indeed did Allah clear her of all wrong-doing when the revelation in the Quran 24:12 came down. “Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of one another and say, "This is an obvious falsehood"? Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allah, who are the liars…” (Surah An-Nur [24: 12 -24]). Allah from the Seven Skies, proved her innocence among all those who accused her.
Allah’s intervention for Aisha (RA) proves that her status was so high in the eyes of Allah. Aisha Bint Abi Baker (RA) is an amazing role model to every young girl out there. She was extremely intelligent, and had the knowledge of Fiqh and Hadith. Whenever the companions couldn’t figure out an issue of Fiqh, they would go to Aisha (RA) and she always seemed to resolve the issues that they had. She even excelled in the fields of medicine and poetry. In fact, Aisha Bint Abi Baker (RA) said, "Teach poetry to your children and let them have taste in their tongue."
When Muhammad ﷺ was on his deathbed, Aisha (RA) was right there by his side. Before Muhammad ﷺ passed away he asked to use Siwak (a natural toothbrush). Aisha (RA) softened the Siwak with her mouth before giving it to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ died in Aisha’s lap (RA) with his head on her chest. He was later buried in her room. Aisha (RA) said, “It was one of the favors of Allah towards me that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ expired in my house…while he was leaning against my chest and Allah made my saliva mix with his saliva at his death” (Bukhari). This part alone should tell you the status of Aisha in the eyes of Muhammad ﷺ and Allah (SWT).
After his passing ﷺ Aisha (RA) kept a low profile, yet she continued to be a prominent Muslimah in her community during her lifetime. Aisha was a notable religious leader. Women always asked her what to do or what the prophet did in his life. In fact, Umar ibn al-Khattab has also asked her advice on various matters, especially one’s concerning women.
Aisha Bint Abi Baker (RA) is truly a notable woman in the Islamic religion. She is a wonderful representation of a woman, daughter, wife and Muslim. She is a representation of what a truthful Muslim should live their life like. Aisha Bint Abi Baker (RA) shows us some of the greatest qualities of a Muslimah, honest, daring, brave, innocent, loving, truthful and intelligence. May Allah guide us all to follow the footsteps of her and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Share her story with those you know, and spread the love of Islam everywhere!
