بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيم
Assalamu Alaikum Everyone!
How are you doing? I hope you are having an amazing day wherever you are in the world! May Allah bless and shower you and all those you love with happiness and health.
Through my short 17 years of living I have realized that our society and world is ever-changing, but what never changes is who you truly are. That is what we will talk about in this blog post, so let us get started.
Growing up, I struggled to figure out who I want to be and who I am. Heck, I still struggle with this. However, it has not stopped me from learning how to be myself and channel my inner me. Unfortunately, our society implements the idea that being ourselves is not accepted, instead, you have to abide with what society finds to be good, attractive, smart, creative, etc. And these ideas are ever-changing. Because of this, we feel as though our identities are changing to what society wants instead of what is morally correct for us. Through exploring this idea myself, I have gathered five tips that I believe should be considered when you are trying to figure out who you are.
This is such an easy one and I think it is a good start for all of us. We all have probably done it at least once in our lives. I remember having to do these in elementary school and even in high school. These tests allow you to ask yourself, who am I? Do I do or not do this? Do I like this or not like this? Am I good at this or not good at this? Do I react this way or not? Etc. etc. Personality tests are just general ideas of who you are and some should be taken with a grain of salt. There are many personality tests out there and I definitely recommend you guys check them out. Just remember to be open-minded with them and only use them as a way to start.
This might seem like a no-brainer but I have found out that there are a number of youths out there with no hobbies or interests. Knowing what makes you happy and optimistic in life is very important. This is because it allows you to build the character you want with the characteristics that are most suitable to you. If you are someone who does not know where their interests lie, try everything. By that I mean, try different hobbies, sports, read about different topics and take note which YouTube videos interest you the most. I would suggest creating a top-five list of things that you love to talk about and start there.
You know that saying, tell me who your friends are and I will tell you, who you are. Yea, our friend group, whether we like it or not, dictates who we are. Friends shape who we are and our personalities become affected by those whose opinions we value. Because of this, it is important that you choose a friend group that will help you better yourself rather than bring your down. Choose a friend group that truly makes you happy about who you are and does not make you feel insecure or out of place. Back in elementary school, I had many so-called “friends” who I valued very dearly. However, they did not treat me the same. They always teased me and made fun of me. Which back then I thought it was normal and I continued to befriend them. However, now looking back at how I felt and how they treated me, I realized that they were never real friends. Choose and make friends that will build you up, help you chase your dreams and look out for you. If you have friends like those, they are definite keepers and they're hard to find.
Now, I know that as teenagers we are still figuring out what path we want to go down, and deciding on our future is still far ahead. However, this does not mean we cannot decide (roughly) about the plans we have for the future. Personally, every month I update my goals for the following month, that way I know what things I want to achieve to help me make sure that my days are productive. These goals could be work on my french, study well for certain tests, write a blog post, etc. All these things make me look forward to the month ahead so I don’t feel lazy and low in energy. I also make sure to update my big list of goals and dreams that I want to achieve for let’s say in the next 10 to 25 years. These goals will include my dream job, the university I want to go to, the program I want to study, and places I want to travel. I strongly encourage you to set up a goals list whether it is for each day, week, month, year or even decade. This will help you be optimistic and excited about what’s to come even if we are oblivious about it. As well, setting up these goals and dreams lists for you will help you figure out what type of person or individual you want to become and what you can do to help you get there.
