Assalamu Alaikum Everyone!
How are you doing? I hope you are having an amazing day wherever you are in the world! May Allah bless and shower you and all those you love with happiness and health.
Today’s blog post will be another transcript for my most recent video. It will be dedicated to all ESL students out there, who want to learn the English language, and speak it perfectly. You can also use these tips to learn other languages, not necessarily English. English is my second language, so I have experience in what’s it like to want to learn English. English is one of the most spoken languages in the world, with over 1.132 billion total speakers. Many of us are required to know English for work and school purposes. Others would like to learn it for their own personal reasons, which is just as important. Through this post, I wanted to highlight a number of tips for those who would like to perfect the language they are trying to learn. I highly suggest you check out the mentioned links in the Home page, as it will have many resources. Without a further a due, I hope you find today's blog post helpful, so let us get started.
♡ listen to the language every day
My very first tip for you is to listen to English you are trying to learn every single day. This is such an important tip for learning any language not just English. Listening to the language you are trying to learn, every day, for at least 10 to 20 minutes, will help you know the accent, the vocabulary and the pronunciation. You will also be able to understand the sentence structure and how words go together. If you want to start learning any language and you are still at your baby steps, then I highly suggest you start listening to it, as the very first thing you do. You are probably wondering, "well what should I listen to? What will really help me improve my English?"
Well, you can listen to a TV show, a movie, a podcast, the news and the radio. Whatever it is, as long as you can get your ears listening to that language, is the most important part. And I did want to highlight the things you can listen to, or where you can find materials to listen to.
If you have an iPhone, there is the Podcasts app on it. And on the Podcasts app, you can find things to listen to. You can find educational and entertainment resources. Whatever it is, there are so many things on that Podcasts app that you can listen to.
You can also download, or you may already have, the Spotify app. If you guys have heard of the language learning app, Duolingo. It actually has a podcast on Spotify, for whatever the language it is you are trying to learn. It is super helpful. I have used it to listen to French podcasts. It gives you everyday scenarios. So, definitely check out the Spotify app, and search for the Duolingo podcast.
If you have an Android, you can download the Radio Public app. It is also a podcast app. I will link on the Home page some of the podcasts you can listen to.
You can also watch TV as I have mentioned above. It will help you learn the language and culture. If you are looking to learn the American language and the American culture, then I highly suggest you watch American TV shows. One English TV show that I recommend that you watch is called Friends. It is a very popular TV show, that you may have already watched. This TV show has a lot of the American language and culture that you will be looking for. Through watching it, you will be able to learn the pronunciation, the accent, the way of speaking and sentence structure.
You can also watch YouTube videos. YouTube is a huge platform that is very easy to use. It has thousands of videos that you can watch. You can search for English (or the language you are learning) video, or you can watch mine.
Lastly, you can also listen to songs and music to learn a language. Actually, my dad recently showed me a video of this kid from Palestine who learned English just through songs. On top of that, he can also rap in English. So, I think it is very cool that you can learn entire languages just through songs.
♡ read stories of that language
Not only should you work on your listening, but you should work on your reading skills. Reading will help you learn and start to perfect grammar and sentence structure. Reading is a great start to learning how to write in English. When you are new to learning English, I would highly suggest you start with reading children’s books. You can also try ESL readers, for books dedicated specifically to English beginners. I have linked on the Home page a website by Bow Valley College full of ESL literacy readers. The website is truly incredible and has a variety levels to help you improve your reading at the level that is most suitable for you. You can even listen to the books before or while you are reading. The website is an amazing free tool that will help you a lot.
♡ write down the alphabet, new words and phrases
When you are beginning to learn English, you obviously need to start learning the vocabulary. Through reading and listening, you will begin to learn new words. As soon as you learn new words, write them down. To memorize the new information so you can stick it to memory, start by writing the word 10 times and then say it out loud 10 times. This will help you memorize them better, and build your vocabulary knowledge. I would also suggest that you also write sentences or phrases. Learning to speak the language in chunks will helps you sound more confidant and fluent when speaking to others. It will also be much easier for you to create sentences when speaking or writing. Have a journal or notebook where you jot down all the new words and sentences that you learn.
♡ keep a diary / journal
Even if you are not perfect at writing or only know a few words, begin to write. Even if you only write one word for that day, with more practice, you will continue to improve in writing. With each time you write in your diary, make sure that you are trying to add on to what you previously wrote. The most important thing is for you to begin writing, helping you to swiftly improve your skills.
♡ get those you know involved in your language learning process
I know it might be a little embarrassing to speak with others when you are not yet fluent in a language. But it is important that you have people on board supporting and encouraging you to continue this journey. They will push you to learn English and you can even tell them not to interrupt you or stop you from learning. If you know anyone that speaks English or is a native English speaker, then make plans to start practicing your speaking with them. Try your best to start speaking English with your friends and family. It would also help you a lot to know someone who speaks English fluently so they can help you improve. If you have no one to talk to in English, then talk to yourself. I know it might sound weird, but it truly helps. Seriously, talk like no one is watching! You can talk about your life, future plans and what you want to improve on. This tip is very important if you want to improve your sentence structure and pronunciation.
♡ dedicate time to learn that language
I mentioned this next tip a little bit in the beginning and it is to dedicate time to learning that language. You cannot expect to perfect the language you are trying to learn, if you are not taking the time to learn it. How ever much you decide to dedicate, make sure you are actually dedicating time. The best amount of time you can dedicate is 15 minutes. Obviously, the more the better. You can dedicate these 15 minutes during any time of the day. Whether it is in the morning, in the evening at night. Whatever works for you.
♡ work on your mistakes and take advice from others
Whenever you are going to learn a language it is important that you take advice from others. If you are speaking with friends or native speakers and they tell you about a mistake of yours, then try to work on that and try to become better. Always look for where you can improve and ask others for advice. You can also work with certified tutors to help you improve and work on your mistakes. I have linked in the Home page websites where you can find tutors that work with students in the language they are trying to learn.
♡ communicate with native speakers
My final tip for today's blog post is to take the time to communicate with native speakers. If you are serious about taking you language learning to a whole new level, then I high suggest you take this step. If you live in a foreign country, then this is for you. Obviously, due to the corona virus, many of cannot meet or talk with others we do not know, as we have to maintain a safe distance. Thus, you can use language exchange platforms or websites, that will help you speak with natives of the language you are trying to learn. My favourite platform that I have used is called HelloTalk. It is a very easy platform to use and I highly recommend that you check it out. Link for such platforms will be in the Home page.
Anyways, thank you so much for reading this post. InshAllah you learned something new. Always remember to work hard for everything you want to do in life. May Allah (SWT) help you in all that you do.
